Source of Acquisition

The Benjamin Huddle Diary collection was acquired by Special Collection prior to 1985. The transcript was acquired in 2011.

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Benjamin Huddle Diary was completed in 1985. Additional information was completed in May 2011.

Biographical Note

Benjamin Huddle was born September 22, 1840. He enlisted on July 23, 1861 in Wythe County as a Confederate soldier in Company B of the 29th Virginia Infantry. He was first wounded in action at Middle Creek , KY, on January 10, 1862 where he was shot in both thighs. He returned and reenlisted in 1862, although he was wounded in action again at Five Forks on March 31, 1865 where he was shot in the arm. He was brought to a hospital in Farmville, Virginia where his arm was amputated. Paroled in April 1865, Huddle died November 29, 1916.

Scope and Contents

The Benjamin Huddle Diary collection consists of a photocopy and transcript of the diary, which describes his experiences in the war. The transcript was produced by Randal Huddle of Rural Retreat, VA.
