Biographical Note
Peter Johnston Davenport was the son of Thomas Davenport and Thomas's first cousin, Permelia Davenport. Although both parents were born in Buckingham County, Virginia, they were married (1799) and resided in Washington County, Virginia. Peter J. was one of eleven children, including his twin brother Daniel. Davenport's first marriage was to Kate Fudge who bore seven children: Elijah Perkins, Alvin Terry, Abel Alderson, Daniel Trigg, Mary J., Margaret, and Ann. In 1851, Davenport married Nancy Evitt.
Scope and Content
This collection contains a tax receipt for the payment of taxes in the amount of six dollars for Peter J. Davenport's stud horse, "Davy Crockett." In addition to the tax receipt, the collection also contains what is marked as "1 Stud Horse Certificate & License."
