(B. 1920) Nurse in service with the University-of-Virginia-sponsored Eighth Evacuation Hospital Unit during World War Two, principally in Italy. Keepsakes, correspondence, and photographs. Autobiographical text, interview (DVD) and transcription.

Biographical / Historical

Dorothy Sandridge was born on January 5th, 1920 in Albemarle County, Virginia. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College and Mary Washington College before studying nursing at the University of Virginia. She graduated in 1942 and was accepted for service in the 8th Evacuation Hospital in the summer of that year. She began working in the sterilizing room, but soon signed up for training as a nurse anesthetist. She served for a brief period in a forward unit and remained with the 8th Evac through the end of the Pacific Campaign. After the war, she worked with tuberculosis patients and then completed further training as a nurse anesthetist. She married Wilber Gloor in 1949, had a daughter and continued working in Connecticut and Massachusetts. She and her husband retired to Charlottesville in 1999 and Dorothy Sandridge Gloor died on June 21, 2016. Additional biographical information can be found in the Historical Exhibits of the Historical Collections at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. Additional biographical information can be found in the Eighth Evacuation Unit Materials and Exhibit pages of the Historical Collections and Services Department, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.

Content Description

The Dorothy Sandridge Gloor Collection consists of keepsakes, correspondence, and photographs relative to Gloor's service as a nurse with the Eighth Evacuation Unit Hospital during World War Two, principally in Italy. Of particular importance are an extensive collection of photographs and albums, as well as a small group of autobiographical texts by Gloor and a recorded interview, all concerning her wartime experiences. Also of interest are scrapbooks of newspaper clippings assembled at the moment by Gloor; these concern reports on the progress of the war, organized by geographical region, in addition to commemorative articles published after the demise of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Arrangement

Textual materials, correspondence, and other papers are filed in Box 1, correspondents ordered by last name. Loose photographs, including those removed from albums, are arranged by general subject folders in Box 2. Boxes 3 and 4 contain photograph albums and newspaper clipping scrapbooks as Gloor made them, inventoried below. These should be handled with care, as some pages are in fragile condition.
