Biographical sketch

In 1884, State Female Normal School, the first state-funded institution of higher learning for women in the Commonwealth of Virginia, opened its doors in Farmville, Virginia. The faculty of the school at that time, along with the president, William H. Ruffner, began meeting weekly. In 1914, as several other female normal schools had opened in Virginia, the school changed their name to State Normal School for Women. By 1924, the academic program had been overhauled and the two-year teacher training program was replaced with a four-year college academic program granting degrees. To reflect that change, the school was renamed State Teachers College. In 1949, the school had greatly expanded curriculum, class sizes were growing exponentially, and the decision was made to change the name of the institution to Longwood College. Throughout these decades, and multiple changes in names, the faculty continued to meet regularly, and the details of those meetings, preserved for posterity, are included in this collection. Although Longwood University's history began in 1839 with the Farmville Female Seminary and later Farmville Female College, there are no surviving records of any faculty meetings prior to 1884.
