Ownership and Custodial History

This school pin belonged to Sue Virginia Puckett while she was a student at then State Normal School in Farmville, Virginia. The pin was subsequently acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.


Biographical sketch

Sue Virginia Puckett was born in 1902 in Clover Hill, Virginia to Eugene and Rhoda Puckett. She attended State Normal School in Farmville, Virginia, earning her diploma in 1922. While a student, Puckett was involved in many student organizations, including the Athenian Literary Society, the Racqueteers Tennis Club, the Hiking Club, the Rural Club, the Athletic Association, the Ellen Richards Club, Mission Band, and the baseball team. Additionally, Sue Puckett was the student assistant in the library and served as the Fourth Year Class Vice President, was the Fourth Year Class Representative to the Student Standards Committee, and served on the YWCA World Fellowship Committee. Puckett returned to (by then) State Teachers College in 1925, earning her bachelor's degree in 1926. After graduation, Sue Virginia Puckett married Dr. Lewis Lush of Richmond, Virginia, a physician who later served as a Major in the U.S. Army during WWII and with the Virginia National Guard. Sue Virginia Puckett Lush also served for many years as the State Chairman of the Council of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers.

Scope and content

The school pin in this collection, which dates from ca. 1917-1922, is approximately.25" in diameter and is comprised of gold with white and blue enamel encircling the Virginia state seal with the words"State Normal School, Farmville, VA.".
