These materials came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from Louisa County.
Historical Information
Louisa Milling and Manufacturing Company was incorporated on March 30, 1871. It was located at Louisa Court House along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The company went out of business around 1878.
The volumes were used as exhibits in a chancery cause entitled M. P. Vaughn for another versus Louisa Milling and Manufacturing Company heard in Louisa County Circuit Court.
Scope and Content Information
This collection consist of business records of Louisa Milling and Manufacturing Company.
Louisa Milling and Manufacturing Company Ledgers Ledger C (1872-1873) and Ledger D (1873-1877) record the accounts of individual customers and the company's controlling accounts. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry includes date of transaction, goods sold and services rendered, amount owed, form of payment, and amount paid. Goods produced and sold by company include meal, corn, plaster, oat and corn chop, and oats. Payments made by cash, credit, labor, and barter of goods such as sumac, meal, plaster bags, and wood. The store's controlling accounts include cash account, meal account, corn account, plaster account, and oats account. Additional information found in Ledger D includes lists of debts owed to the company in 1874, 1875 and 1877, statements of liabilities in 1874 and 1877, statements of assets in 1874 and 1877, and statements of the company's financial condition in 1874 and 1877. Both volumes include an index at the front that lists customers' names in alphabetical order and page numbers where customers' accounts can be found.
Louisa Milling and Manufacturing Company Cashbook, 1874-1878, records on a periodic basis cash received from goods sold and debts owed to the company and cash paid for expenses such as taxes, debts, cost of labor, and purchase of raw materials. Information found in each entry includes date of transaction, name of account or individual cash was received from or paid to, and total amount of cash received or cash paid.
