Biographical / Historical

George Washington was the first president of the United States and benefactor of Washington Academy (formerly Liberty Hall Academy) in Lexington, Virginia.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes three original George Washington letters and multiple copies and transcripts of letters. Originals include a letter from Washington to Capt. William Bronaugh dated January 18, 1775, a letter to the "Officers and Soldiers of the Militia in the Counties of Hunterdon, Burlington, Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland," 1777, encouraging them to fight for freedom, and a letter dated August 26, 1787, from George Washington to his nephew, George Augustine Washington, with instructions in regards to the maintenance of his Mt. Vernon estate. Copies of letters include Washington to Richard Henry Lee dated August 29, 1775, one photocopied letter to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, dated December 28, 1796, one photocopied letter to the trustees of Washington Academy dated June 17, 1798, and one photocopied indenture dated September 30, 1794.
