Soldier in the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry in the Civil War; later, Vice President of the Cavalry Corps in the Society to the Army of the Potomac. Writes Samuel E. Chamberlain, President of the Cavalry Corps, S.A.P., in 1888, urging him to nominate a cavalryman as the next president of the S.A.P., citing the importance of the cavalry at the Battle of Gettysburg (1863).
