The John H. Squires Papers were acquired by Special Collections in 1962 and 1970.
Processing Information
The processing, arrangement, and description of the John H. Squires Papers was completed prior to 2011. Additional description was completed in March 2011 and October 2015.
Biographical Note
John H. Squires was a native of North Carolina and later worked there as a banker for Union National Bank. Squires was educated at Virginia Tech (B.S., Agriculture, 1905; M.S., 1906) and later attended Cornell University (Ph.D., 1909). He also donated the funds for building Virginia Tech's student union, now Squires Student Center. Squires died March 14, 1934.
Scope and Content
The collection contains papers relating to Squires' will with affidavits, notes regarding stocks, correspondence, his diplomas from Virginia Tech and Cornell University, and a certificate from the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Correspondence with Julian Burruss indicates Squires donated money to Virginia Polytechnic Institute at the time of his death. The collection also includes a copy of his will with supporting documentation and several diplomas and a certificate.

The collection is in chronological order. Undated materials are at the end.
Separated Material
The Map of Caldwell County, NC, 1931 (Map.0429) was transferred to the Historical Map Collection, Special Collections.
