There is a 152-page typed uncorrected first draft of Writing in America by Erskine Caldwell. Among the miscellaneous material is a copy of a letter, March 24, 1930, from Caldwell to his parents, concerning his determination to win one of that year's Guggenheim Fellowship awards and his ambition to write a novel that will win the Pulitzer Prize. Other miscellaneous items include a manuscript, "Various Veracious Verses," 1966, by Caroline Bell Caldwell; Erskine Caldwell's closing remarks for the International Writer's Meeting on "Peace, the hope of the Planet," October 25, 1984; a witty essay on the controversy of marriage by Erskine Caldwell; a print of a sketch of Caldwell by his wife Virginia Caldwell; and, a photograph of Caldwell. Printed material about Caldwell and his works include newspaper and magazine articles, reprints, pamphlets, programs, and posters. Lindberg; and, a special issue of The Southern Quarterly , Spring 1989, devoted to Caldwell.
