Biographical/Historical Information

John Peter Jones enlisted on July 8, 1861 in Buckingham County next hit, Virginia, and was wounded at the battle of Gaines Mills (June 27, 1862) but after recuperating in a Richmond hospital returned to duty. He was captured at the battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863) in the aftermath of Pickett's charge and confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, Fort Delaware (on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River), and Johnson's Island until exchanged and paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland on March 14, 1865. After the war he joined John Bowie Strange Camp, United Confederate Veterans, in Albemarle previous hitCounty next hit, Virginia; he died in 1910 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Charlottesville. 1

Johnson's Island, Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, was a 300-acre Union military prison where Confederate officers (3,000) and enlisted men and disloyal civilians were held in barracks. The prison itself consisted of a four-sided stockade surrounded by a fifteen-foot high wooden fence whose base a ditch surrounded to prevent tunneling. The first 200 prisoners arrived in April 1862; after July 1862 mostly Confederate officers were housed on the island. By the end of the war approximately 15,000 men had been confined there.
