Scope and Content Information
This material added to the Hugh Scott Papers consists of ca. 8,700 items (20 Hollinger boxes, ca. 7.5 linear shelf feet), 1944-1981, of personal correspondence and papers, political papers, photographs, printed material and memorabilia primarily pertaining to Scott's last five years as a United States senator. These additions also include some material from his legal career, and from his position as a distinguished public figure following his retirement from the Senate in 1977.
Topics of interest in the correspondence, 1976-1978, include oriental art, Scott's affiliation with Randolph-Macon College and the University of Virginia, his visits abroad, and his retirement. Correspondence with notable members of the Senate and House of Representatives is included, as is some with family; there is also some legal correspondence. A "VIP correspondence" file, chiefly 1961-1968, includes letters signed by Richard M. Nixon, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Dean Rusk, Hubert H. Humphrey, Carl Hayden, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., and Levertt Saltonstall.
The personal papers, 1971-1981, relate to such topics as the Board of Foreign Scholarships, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans, Oxford University lectures by Scott, Randolph-Macon College, and Youth for Understanding.
The political papers, 1958-1980, include material for Scott's 1964 campaign for the U.S. Senate, the Panama Canal treaties, his books regarding China and The Life of the Party , and his trips to other foreign countries. Scott visited Australia in 1978, Canada in 1975, China in 1973 and 1978, England in 1977, Japan in 1974, 1976, 1978, and 1980; Malaysia and the Far East in 1976, South East Asia in 1972, and the U.S.S.R. in 1975.
The photographs, 1953 and 1969-1981, are chiefly from Scott's visits abroad. Photographs of the Youth for Understanding conference in Japan include Senators William Roth, Robert Byrd, Howard Baker, and James William Fulbright, Representative Silvio Conte, Prime Minister Suzuki, and Foreign Minister Ito. Also included are photographs of Scott and Secretary of State John F. Dulles and Attorney General Herbert Brownell at the Inauguration of President Eisenhower; as well as Scott, Jimmy Carter, and Governor William Averell Harriman during discussions of the Panama Canal treaties; and of Oriental art. In addition there is an engraving of Thomas Jefferson by Jacques Couché.
