This collection consists of ca. twenty items, 1785-1865, chiefly correspondence of the Jefferson, Randolph, Nicholas and Kean families. Of special interest are three letters by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826): November 13, 1791, to Martha Jefferson Randolph (1772-1836) while in Philadelphia, where he mentions the affairs of the French West Indies and Philip Freneau's newspaper; December 7, 1808, to Thomas Jefferson Randolph (1792-1875), in which he asks Randolph to pay a couple of debts for him, informs him that he is sending a polygraph to [Rubens?] Peale, and recommends the study of Sallust and Tacitus; and January 24, 1817, to John Wayles Eppes (1773-1823), in which he informs Eppes that his son, Francis Eppes (1801-1881), is learning Spanish and congratulates him on his return to public office. Ten letters were written to Thomas Jefferson and are endorsed by him; they include: a letter from his daughter, Maria Jefferson (1778-1804), concerning her study of Don Quixote , Spanish and English grammar, and other subjects; a letter from Thomas Mann Randolph, Jr. (1768-1828), March 12, 1798, concerning financial matters and a visit by Hore Browse Trist; one from Wilson Cary Nicholas (1761-1820), May 2, 1804, concerning his appointment to the post of collector at Norfolk and mentioning Maria's death; another from Martha Jefferson Randolph, May 31, 1804, expressing concern over her father's health; and a letter from John Wayles Eppes, August 19, 1820, concerning a loan for four thousand dollars and his hopes of sending Francis Eppes to Columbia College.

Other correspondents includes: Charles L. Bankhead (1788-1833), Elizabeth Eppes, R.G.H. Kean (1828-1898), Joseph Higbee, George W. Randolph (1818-1867), Col. T.J. Randolph, Thomas Mann Randolph, Sr. (1741- 1793), and Thomas Ritchie (1778-1854).

Other items of interest include: an itemized medical bill, February 28-November 6, 1824, from Dr. Andrew Kean to Thomas J. Randolph, and a receipt, June 7, 1865, to Mr. R.G.H. Kean, former Confederate chief of the Bureau of War, for a package of military documents, reports, and correspondence of General Robert E. Lee, delivered to Franklin A. Stratton.
