Acquisition Information
This holding was acquired in installments. Collection 6833-a was given to the Library by William Peden, Department of English, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri on January 1, 1967. Collection 6833-b was given by William Peden on January 14, 1981. Collection 6833-c was also given by William Peden on January 14, 1981.
Biographical/Historical Information
William Peden was born on March 22, 1913. He received his B.S.(1934), M.S.(1936), and Ph.D.(1942) degrees all at the University of Virginia. His academic career began as an instructor at the University of Maryland, followed by faculty membership of the Extension Division at the University of Virginia, and continued as a professor of English at the University of Missouri. William Peden's achievements consist of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Thomas Jefferson Award, and the McConnell Foundation. Most of Peden's publications concern the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson.
Scope and Content Information
This collection consists includes correspondence, notes & corrections, and a draft of William Peden's introduction to Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia.
The correspondence files contain letters from the following: Charles Barham, Julian Boyd, L.H. Butterfield, Lester Cappon, Jane Carson, Verner Clapp, John S. Creagham, Lambert Davis, L.P. Eisenhart, Stephen T. Riley, Miss E.M. Sowerby, Joseph C. Vance Coolie Verner, and John C. Wyllie. Accession number 6833-b contains additional letters between John C. Wyllie and William Peden for the years 1935-1968. The majority of the correspondence concerns William Peden's edition of the Notes on the State of Virginia. Accession number 6833-c consists of additional John Cook Wyllie material, 1940-1944, and undated, including letters to William Peden.
