Acquisition Information

This ledger was purchased by the Library from Bookworm and Silverfish, Wytheville, Virginia, on July 26, 1993.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of a single bound ledger book, 292 full pages, 1884-1891, containing the records of the Mica Mines Farm, Hanover, Virginia, and the Sligo Farm, [Hanover County?] with occasional references to the sale of mica and scrap mica from the mines (for examples see pages 60-61, 63, 220-221 but mica is mentioned throughout) and the purchase of mining equipment (pages 38-39).

The ledger records the costs of a great variety of miscellaneous goods and services bought and sold by the farms, making it an excellent source for the types of items purchased at the time and their costs. The ledger has individual accounts for bacon, butter, cash receipts, sales, stock records listing cows, their calving records, and bull services (pages 256-257 & attached sheet, and 286-287), farming and garden records for both Sligo Farm and Mica Mines Farm with crops, planting dates and results all listed. Detailed records of various accounts with individuals were also kept for the farms.
