Scope and Content Information

The material covers Faulkner's visit to Lima, Peru (August 7, 1954); the International Congress of Writers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Robert Frost (August 9-21, 1954); Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagano Japan as special lecturer at the American Literature Seminar at Nagano (August - September 1955); Munich, Germany (September 1955); Rome, Italy (August 28-September 16, 1955); Reykjavik, Iceland (October 12-17, 1955); and Athens, Greece to attend the gala performance of his play, Requiem for a Nun, and the presentation of the scroll and silver medal of the Greek Academy.

There are photographs, 1955 and 1957, of William Faulkner in Japan and Greece. In Greece, he is pictured with actors Dimitri Myrat and Voula Zoumboulaki, Foreign Minister Averof and American Ambassador George V. Allen, and Allen and Prince Peter of Greece, during intermission and after the performance of Requiem for a Nun; and, with Pangiotis Poulitas and Mr. Athanassiades-Novas in the Aula of the Greek Academy.

In addition, there are newspapers re William Faulkner and his foreign travel to the Philippines, Japan, and Greece. A press coverage scrapbook, "William Faulkner Japan Visit, August 1-23, 1955, U. S. Specialists Program," contains newspaper clippings in English and Japanese (with translations), and an interview in Japanese with translation.

Correspondence, 1968-1976, of Harold E. Howland with publishers concerning his article, "Midnight Ride with William Faulkner." Correspondents include Dorothy B. Commins, Princeton, New Jersey; Donald S. Klopfer, Random House, Inc.; Alexander D. Wainwright, Princeton University Library Chronicle; and several publications, including the Foreign Service Journal, Reader's Digest, The American Scholar, and The Mississippi Quarterly. There is also a letter from Elizabeth Langhorne, Vieques, Puerto Rico to James A. Donovan, Jr., Department of State, with comments on William Faulkner contacts in Moscow. There are various manuscript versions with autograph revisions of Howland's "Midnight Ride with William Faulkner" and drafts, notes, and relevant newspaper clippings for "William Faulkner-A Spiritual Kinship with Russian Writers."
