This document, January 2, 1809, is a deposition taken from
several residents of
Loudoun County
, Virginia , concerning the
character of Colonel
John Alexander , who had apparently served
as a magistrate of the
county
, the high sheriff, its
representative in the Virginia General Assembly, and as a
colonel in the Loudoun
County
Militia during the Revolutionary
War.
Alexander had been injured by the actions of his deputies
who without his knowledge had involved him debts and disputes
because he was too infirm to properly supervise their
activities. The following individuals all testified to his
good character and service to the county
