Scope and Content
This collection consists of two additional items pertaining to Levi Pitman (1807-1892), including a bound typescript copy of "Extracts from the Diaries of Levi Pitman of Mt. Olive, Shenandoah County, Virginia , 1845-1892" selected by Daniel W. Bly of Harrisonburg, Virginia, from the original diaries deposited in the Manuscripts Division of the Special Collections Department, University of Virginia Library.
The other item is a bound receipt book kept by Levi Pitman and used as a commonplace book for recipes, home remedies and cures and other notes. These include directions for such products as Keller's white salve, labor saving soap, white and light bread, candles, a good cement, and cures for sore throat, the summer complaints, snake bite, scratches on a horse, and burns. The book has been professionally repaired and housed.
