Content Description

Two autobiographical publications by West Virginians who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The first, entitled "A Diary Depicting the Experiences of DeWitt Clinton Gallagher in The War Between the States While Serving in the Confederate Army", is the compilation of Gallagher's memo books and related fragments, which were then transcribed and published by his son in 1945. Gallagher was born in Jefferson County and later lived in Charleston, where he practiced law. The second, "Recollections of a Life Time", written and published by Daniel S. Dewees of Gilmer County, regards his service in the Confederate Army, local history, and genealogical information about early settler families in North-Central West Virginia. "Recollections" was published ca. 1904 when Dewees was in his eighties.
