Scope and Contents

Papers of Everett F. Moore, a lawyer who practiced in Marshall County and the surrounding area. Everett Moore was the uncle of Governor Arch Moore; they practiced law together. This collection mainly includes papers regarding legal cases and Moore's law practice as well maps of coal fields and other mineral resources; this material dates from 1920-1964.

Legal documents (Boxes 1-6) within the collection include correspondence, deeds, abstracts of title, tax documents, and other legal documents. There are a large number of documents regarding the Ruth Coal and Coke Company (Box 3). There also reports on tracts of coal land in Marshall and Wetzel Counties.

The maps (Boxes 7-8, oversize folders) within this collection mainly concern Marshall and Wetzel counties. There are also maps of neighboring counties, including those in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Some of the maps are of the entire state of West Virginia. Maps show coal fields, oil and gas fields, farms lines, or the results of a geologic survey. Some of the maps are of company properties. Boxes 7 and 8 contain rolled maps and the oversize folders contain maps stored flat.

Other items of interest include Moore's personal copy of the Moundsville Charter and Ordinances (1920) and an etching plate mounted on a wooden block.
