Biographical / Historical

The Medical Technology Program at West Virginia University, now the Division of Medical Laboratory Science, is part of the university's School of Medicine. It leads to the completion of a bachelor of science degree in medical laboratory science, with an area of emphasis in clinical laboratory science. The program was established in 1945 by Dr. Edward J. Van Liere, and for the most part was under the supervision of the Department of Pathology. The first graduate students in the program were enrolled in the fall of 1965. Betholene Love served as director of the program from 1955 to 1984, when she was replaced by Jean Holder. In September 2003, Martha J. Lake, Ed.D., became the program director.

Scope and Contents

The medical technology program at West Virginia University, now the Division of Medical Laboratory Science, is part of the university's School of Medicine. Records of the West Virginia University Medical Technology Program and other related materials document the education of medical technologists chiefly from the 1960s to the early 1980s in general and specifically at WVU. Materials related to the WVU medical technology program and School of Medicine include correspondence, financial materials, annual reports, curriculum materials, scrapbooks, photographs, slides, handbooks and teaching manuals, curriculum books, graduate student problem studies, and items from Alpha Delta Theta, the local chapter of the national medical technology sorority. Other records, including reports, newsletters, conference materials, and publications pertain to the West Virginia State Medical Association, the Monongahela Valley Society of Medical Technologists, the American Society for Medical Technology, and the general field of medical technology education.

Box 1 through Box 12 chiefly contain materials related to West Virginia University's School of Medicine and the medical technology program from the 1960s to the 1980s, during the tenure of Betholene Love. Materials include information on the history and development of the program (box 2, box 9); course materials (box 2, box 3); curriculum information (box 2, box 5, box 6, box 7); faculty and supervisor meeting minutes (box 8); senior year curriculum books (box 10, box 11); graduate student problem studies from the 1960s to 1980s (box 11, box 12); commencement information from the 1970s (box 1); correspondence (box 1); workshop materials from the 1960s and 1970s (box 3); teaching handbooks and manuals (box 7, box 8); annual reports from the School of Medicine, 1940s-1970s (box 2, box 9); medical newsletters and publications related to the School of Medicine, 1970s-1980s (box 4, box 6); and some information about state society meetings (box 1, box 2).

Box 13 through Box 15 primarily contain materials pertaining to the field of education of medical technology education and to the related professional associations. Includes information on medical technology careers (box 13); health education in the 1970s (box 14); reports from the Monongahela Valley Society of Medical Technologists, 1960s (box 15); and newsletters, newspapers, and convention and conference materials from the American Society of Medical Technologists, 1960s-1980s (box 13, box 14, and box 15, oversize box 2).

Box 16, Box 17, and Oversize Box 1 contain materials related to the WVU chapter of Alpha Delta Theta (see also several scattered ADT items in box 6). Items include scrapbooks from 1957 to 1975, pledge tests, programs, and guest books.

Oversize Box 2 contains any collection-related photographs and slides.

Separated Material

Issues of the West Virginia Microscoop , a quarterly publication of the West Virginia State Society of Medical Technologists, from 1952, 1953, and 1955 to 1971 have been transferred to the reference collection. WVU School of Medicine Anouncements, 1955-1959, and WVU School of Medicine Medical Technology Program Announcements, 1946-47, 1951-55, and 1960-61, have been also been transferred to the reference collection. Two recruiting pamphlets for the West Virginia University Medical Technology Program have been transferred to the Printed Ephemera Collection.
