Scope and Contents

This is the third accession of the papers of Andrew Nelson Campbell. Mr. Campbell was an attorney in Monroe County, W. Va. He served in the Confederate Army and was a graduate of the Washington and Lee University Law School. He represented Monroe County as a Delegate in the State Legislature, 1872, and was a member of the Board of Regents of West Virginia University. He was, also, Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit, 1888-1896.

The main part of these papers are court case papers and correspondence from various clients of the law firm of Hereford and Campbell. Also included are wills,estate settlements (see processing notes for names), deeds, surveys and plat[s], reports and correspondence concerning the Deepwater, and Tidewater Railway Companies for whom Mr. Campbell was active in Confederate Veteran Organizations and the papers include correspondence relating to their Camps, Monuments at various places, and newspaper clippings of lists and letters giving a brief history and the Roll of Lowry's Battery, C.S.A., and the place of residence of each member in 1909. There are also the Rolls of twelve additional Confederate military units (see processing notes for titles). There are letters from and to various members of the Campbell family.

The main subjects covered by these papers include, estates; real estate management and land transactions; railroads; civil war; counterfeiting; genealogy; poltics; Salt Sulphur, Union and Fort Spring stage Line; Washington and Lee U.; coal; bridges; timber; Monroe County history and home coming; and roads.

Correspondents include Charles E. Hughes, E. W. Wilson, G. W. Imboden, [ ] L. Wilson, and numerous contemporary attorneys and buisness men.
