Biographical / Historical

Arthur J. "Pete" Ballard (ca. 1931-2017) was born in Welch, West Virginia, and resided in Peterstown, WV in his later years. He was a nationally known costume designer, museum costume historian and conservator.

He received a degree in education from Concord University in 1953. His career as an educator also took him to Saudi Arabia to teach English as a second language for eight years, as well as to Vietnam and China. He then taught for many years at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

While teaching in Winston-Salem, Ballard was asked to become curator of the costume collection at the Reynolda House Museum, the former R.J. Reynolds estate. He continued to do costume curation and conservation work at several major museums in the South. Leftover scraps of fabric from his work with costumes inspired him to create dolls whose clothing exemplified authentic period fashions. His work in teaching, painting, and costumes led his to friendships with a wide variety of people, including Sarah Churchill, Vivien Leigh, and King Hussein of Jordan.

The recipient of many awards and honors for his work in multiple fields, Ballard was named one of the Outstanding Educators in America (1970). His work with costumes earned the Award of Merit from the North Carolina Historic Preservation Society (1978) and a Gold Award from the National Retail Merchants Associates (1978). He was named Concord University's Golden Alumnus in 2007. His West Virginia awards include the Order of the Arts and Historical Letters from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History (2006), the Distinguished West Virginian Award (2007), and the Order of the 35th Star (2010). He also chaired the Coal Heritage Highway Authority (2002).
