Biographical / Historical

Joseph Eldridge Dodd (1907-1945), painter and art professor, was a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He attended the West Virginia Colored Institute, graduating in 1929 as President of his class. He subsequently studied at the National Academy of Design in New York. During the mid-1930s he taught at Bluefield State College. About 1940, he took a leave of absence to further his studies at Yale University where he won several awards. Drafted into military service in 1942, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Returning home in poor health, he died in Bluefield in November 1945.
