Scope and Contents

Financial Ledger of 11 bound leaves detailing transactions for goods and services in the Rockbridge County area of Virginia in the period 1847-1854. Records include customer names, dates of transactions, products and services provided, and cost.

The location of Rockbridge County was deduced through researching customer names recorded in the ledger within a genealogy database for records in Virginia.

Customer names include: John Kerr, Samuel P. McLain, Samuel Paxton, Susan Paxton, James Risk, Susan Weather, and Samuel Whitesel.

Food and beverage products sold include: apples, bacon, beef, brandy, buckwheat, butter, cider, coffee, flour, salt, and wheat.

Other products sold include: clover seed, shoes, soap grease, and tallow.

Services provided include: cobbling shoes and boots, coopering barrels, and weaving yarn.
