Biographical Note
Charles E. Cantzon (1841-1908) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and served in the 18th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Cantzon enlisted with Company C as a private in January 1861. Initially the company was known as Company I, and later Company II. In Augusst 1862 he was promoted to First Sergeant. He died in Wharton, Texas in January 1908.

Scope and Content
The Charles E. Cantzon Journal contains handwritten sheets of varying sizes that are memoirs and journal entries from the American Civil War from 1860-1865. Cantzon's journal recounts the unit's experiences, including its losses at Shiloh, his encounters with local families and plantations, and the changes in leadership of the 18th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry of the Confederate Army.
Please note: The original, handwritten notes extremely fragile. Please use transcripts, when possible.
