Biographical Note

Jeremiah Talcott Lockwood was born on November 3, 1846 in New Canaan, CT. He enlisted into the Co, A of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery on August 28, 1862. During his service, he carried photos of his parents. He was wounded on June 18, 1864 in Petersburg when a bullet hit him as the army advanced. He was discharged from military service after three years of service on August 28, 1865. Following the war, Lockwood was a furniture dealer and undertaker. He married Louisa Carpenter. They had one son, Richard C. Lockwood. Richard served in the U.S. Army in France during WWI. He died in 1925.

Scope and Content

The Jeremiah T. Lockwood Collection includes CDV portraits and passes including hospital passes and picket passes. Portraits include Lockwood as a soldier during the Civil War, the portraits of his mother and father that he carried throughout his service in the Civil War, reunions of McKeel Post at GAR events, and Lockwood in front of multiple Civil War monuments, and a portrait of him in his Civil War uniform and his son, Richard, in his WWI U.S. Army uniform. The photographs date from 1862-1923.
