Biographical Note

Junius Woodward was probably born about 1846 or 1847 in Alabama. Records don't clearly indicate with which regiment he served during the Civil War, but it was probably one from Alabama. After the war, he returned to Talladega and lived with his family, working as a clerk. In 1876, he married Sarah Rogers Wood (sometimes listed in census records as "Sallie"). They had one son, Rice. Woodward died in Talladega, Alabama, in 1921.

Scope and Contents

The Junius Woodward Letter consists of a letter from Woodward to "dear friend" (also identified in the letter as "Miss Jennie"). Written at Petersburg, Virginia, on November 29, 1863, Woodward describes his free time activities, experiences with local farmers, and foraging for fruits. He also makes some mention of spending the upcoming winter around Petersburg and asks for her to write again soon.
