The letter shares news of stoppage of furloughs and opinions that a new campaign was in the making. James' portion of the letter mentioned how furloughs were stopped and how a large battle was in the offing. James also requested someone to hickory whip some boys [whether in jest is not know; slaves or white is not known] for stealing corn. Jehu's portion of the letter also mentions the stoppage of furloughs in the army. Also believes a new campaign is about to begin due to the the amount of reviews the generals were performing on the regiments, brigades, and divisions. He also mentioned the fact that Ulysses S. Grant was now commanding the Army of the Potomac opposite them and shared the opinion that Grant would cross the Rapidan River and drive to Richmond.
