Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a single letter from N. B. White to his cousin, Darius, written from Boliver Heights, near Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, dated October 19, 1862. White talks of taking care of three sick fellow soldiers, camp duties (especially guard and picket), and recent skirmishes of the regiment. He also shares the story of an explosion in camp when several soldiers who built a cooking space on top of a buried shell: "some of the men built an arch to cook on there was fore cooking the other day and they happened to be a shell in the dirt under the arch and when they built a fire the shell bursted and cild fore men." He closes his letter with news of family and a request for more letters from home.
