Biographical Note
Ansil T. Bartlett was a private with Company D, 58th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry. He likely enlisted in March of 1864 and he served through the end of the war. Records in the Congressional Serial Set indicate was still alive in 1918 and he received a raise in his pension in both 1917 and 1918.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of a letter by Ansil T. Bartlett to his father, dated April 15, 1865. Written from Camp Farmville, Virginia, the letter mentions soldiers stealing goods from nearby homes, daily tasks, war rumors, and Bartlett's hope to be home by July 4th. There is also a pencil sketch of a bird.
