Drawings, sketches, course notes, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to architectural collections are also present.

The IAWA Small Collections is an artificial collection compiled by Special Collections in 2009.

Processing Information

The processing, arrangement and description of the IAWA Small Collections commenced in July, 2009 and was completed in September, 2009. The bulk of the material came from the IAWA One Folder Collections and other small, mostly biographical collections deemed by Special Collections staff to be more accessible in the artificial collection format. The original accession and manuscript numbers were retained and are enclosed in brackets on the individual folders.


Historical Information

The International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), established in 1985, is a joint program of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and the University Libraries at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The purpose of the Archive is to document the history of women's involvement in architecture by collecting, preserving, storing, and making available to researchers the professional papers of women architects, landscape architects, designers, architectural historians and critics, urban planners, and the records of women's architectural organizations.

The IAWA Small Collections was compiled from a variety of sources by Special Collections staff for use in reference and research. The collection consists primarily of biographical materials for women architects, architectural historians, and designers including curriculum vitas, firm brochures, exhibit notices, photographs, and publications. Drawings, sketches, course notes, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to architectural collections are also present.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged alphabetically into three series Persons and Associations, Publications, and Subject Files.

Billmyer designed several residential and commercial buildings in the Tidewater region, including over 200 private residences and The Circle Restaurant in Portsmouth, Virginia. The restaurant was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 and demolished in 2013. Materials include biographical information about Dorothy Pebworth Morgan Billmyer; correspondence from her husband Frank W. Designed a residence for artist Lawren Harris in Toronto and was elected the first woman member of the Ontario Association of Architects in 1931, yet entered nursing school that same year and spent the rest of her career as a nurse. Materials consist of research notes, correspondence, published biographical sources, and card files compiled by Barbara Sankey of Toronto, who researched Biriukova's career.

A founding member of the AIA Women's Leadership Summit and active member of the Boston Society of Architects, Sho-Ping advocated passionately on behalf of Women in Design. In January 2016, Payette announced the Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship, a $10,000 annual award for a woman studying architecture at the undergraduate and graduate level. The award was the first AIA Scholarship named after a woman architect and the first specifically designated for women students. Himanen receieved a M.Arch from Moscow Architecture Institute in 1981. She worked for a number of years in Moscow, Russia in a state design institute for hotel, resort and retail buildings before moving to Finland in 1986. In Finland, Himanen worked for Juhani Pallasmaa, SAFA, Hon. FAIA, a prominent Finnish architect and former dean of Helsinki School of Architecture at Otaniemi, who she credits with shaping her architectural vision and taste. Himanen moved to the United States in 1994 where she has worked for several architecture firms in New York.

She opened her own practice briefly from 1966-1967, until she joined Flatow, Moore, Bryan and Fairburn (1968-1988) to work with Max Flatow on the Albuquerque Urban Renewal Project. She had many firsts attached to her name: first woman to become a corporate member of the Albuquerque Chapter, AIA; she was also the first woman elected president of that chapter (1984); first woman to serve on the New Mexico Board of Examiners for Architects. Collection includes clippings, memorial service material, New Mexico Women's Hall of Fame Nomination form, and photocopies of various awards received by Hooker.

    Rositsa Peeva-Popova (sister of Maria Peeva) graduated from Sofia Polytechnic in 1981, and was then assigned by the government to work for the Design Organization in the town of Gabrovo. She later worked for towns of Ruse and Schumen before establishing a private practice with her architect husband. That practice opened in Schumen but moved to Varna, where Popova teaches (2007) architecture at the Varna Free University. Popova's work centers on urban design, with many apartment buildings as well as gas stations, commercial facilities, and urban space designs. Her donation includes drawings for an Evangelical Church and a Fashion House for the Factory "Val Poskova," both in Schumen as well as a curriculum vitae.

    Anne Rysdale was the only practicing female architect in the state of Arizona between 1949-1960. She was born and raised in Tucson. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1940 with a degree in Engineering and Fine Arts as the University of Arizona did not have an architecture program at that time. In 1946, she received her Master's of Architecture at the University of Washington (Seattle). In her early career, she worked for Henry Jaastad and Arthur Brown, two prominent Tucson architects. She established her own firm Anne J. Rysdale, Architect & Assocs, Inc. in 1949. Rysdale Associates grew to be a 105 person architectural and construction management firm with offices in Tucson and Scottsdale, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rysdale moved to Florida and has been practicing there since 1981. Also goes by Barbara N. Rysdale. The collection contains a pattern book titled Anne J. Rysdale Distinctive Plans for Western Homes & Multi-Units . The book is divided into six sections: one bedroom (4); two bedroom (76); three bedroom (72); four bedroom (17); duplex (12); and triplex (4).

    Mary Otis Stevens graduated from MIT with a bachelors' degree in 1956. A protégé of Walter Gropius she is considered one of the most important female architects in the Northeast during the 1960s and 1970s. She partnered with her husband Thomas McNulty from 1956 to 1969, creating in 1965, one of their most influential projects the Lincoln House.

    In 1975, Stevens founded the Design Guild, a collaborative architectural practice focused on non-profit clients, historic preservation and adaptive re-use; the Guild disbanded in 1991. The collection includes photocopied material (including articles and photographs of models) of various projects: Stevens' MIT thesis; a proposed Catholic Church; house on Kittery Point; Lincoln House; and the Design Guild.

    Ljubinka Stoilova is an architect and architectural researcher who has published articles and monographs about theory and history of 19th and 20th century architecture. She has also helped organize over 10 documentary exhibitions in Bulgaria, Austria, and The Czech Republic. Her collection includes an exhibition postcard and a curriculum vitae that includes a small color image. The 2006 exhibition catalog that she wrote with Irina Genova, Presences/Absences: Women Artists and Architects in the Modern Art of Bulgaria is in ADDISON and available in the Special Collections Rare Book Room.

Collection consists of a brief explanation of the Center's work and projects and a survey designed by the Center to evaluate a building's accessibility to the handicapped. Also includes an extensive brochure of works by her firm, Bielus, Goldemberg, Waistein-Krasuk, Architects, from 1966 to 1981.

The collection consists of a copy of the nomination form to name Wilburn a 2003 Georgia Woman of Achievement and photocopies of supporting research material compiled by James McManus. The Leila Ross Wilburn Collection is housed in the Kenan Research Center of the Atlanta History Center.

    Exhibit catalog (2009) edited by Sigal Davidi that chronicles the first exhibition of female architects in the history of Israeli architecture. The exhibit opened at the Union of Architects in Jaffa (2007) and featured the built projects of 22 "veteran and new architects." The projects were also accompanied by a short manifesto that the architects were asked to write. A video, "A skirt of concrete and cement," directed by architect Vered Fluk was shown as part of the exhibit and the DVD of this film is included with the catalog.
