The 24th Virginia Infantry Records were acquired by Special Collections and University Archives in July 1990.

Processing Information

The processing and description of the 24th Virginia Infantry Records commenced and was completed in September, 2022.

Administrative History

The 24th Virginia Infantry Regiment was comprised of companies recruited in southwestern Virginia, with Company E being organized in Pulaski County. The regiment's field officers included colonels Jubal A. Early and William A. Terry. The regiment served throughout the war, participating in a numbrer of battles, including First Manassas, the Seven Day's Battles, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign.

Marshall Canada enlisted in Company E at Newbern, Virginia on February 27, 1862, and was present with the company through June, 1863. Canada was wounded and captured during the Battle of Gettysburg and was paroled at David's Island, on September 27, 1863. Afterward, he was hospitalized in Chimborazo Hospital (Richmond), then given a month's furlough. and assigned to light duty with the Conscription Bureau in September, 1864.

John R. Hudson enlisted in Company E at Lynchburg, Virginia on May 27, 1861. He was promoted to corporal on September 21, 1861; wounded at the battles of New Bern, Drewry's Bluff, and Seven Pines; and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital on February 20, 1863. He returned to duty on March 25, 1863. He was again admitted to Chimborazo on May 17, 1864. On September 1, 1864, he was promoted to sergeant.

Richard Landrum, a farmer, enlisted in Company E at Lynchburg on May 27, 1861. He was admitted to Chimbarazo Hospital with orchitis on April 1, 1862 and transferred to Lynchburg. He was also admitted to Chimborazo with typhus on January 11, 1863, and records list him as absent sick from December 28, 1862 to June 3, 1863. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville (May, 1863). Following his wounding at Chancellorsville, Landrum never returned to service.

Burgess Whitt enlisted in Company E at Newbern on March 1, 1862. He was wounded at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia on May 16, 1864, and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital two days later but returned to duty June 23. He was captured at Farmville on April 6, 1865, and released from the prison at Point Lookout, Maryland on June 22.

Solomon Wood enlisted in Company E at Newbern on March 14, 1862. He was wounded slightly at Second Manassas and again at Gettysburg. He was detailed as a guard at White Sulphur Springs in January 1864, then retired from duty on April 1, 1864, and returned to Pulaski County, where he died on November 12, 1891.

Scope and Content

This collection contains five documents relating to M. Canada, John R. Hudson, R. Laundrum [or Landrum], Burgess Whitt, and Solomon Wood, all soldiers in Company E, 24th Virginia Infantry during the American Civil War. Included are descriptive lists and accounts of pay and clothing for Whitt and Hudson, dated September 23 and October 14, respectively; and a 35-day furlough for M. Canada from Chimbarazo Hospital, dated October, 1863. The documents also include certificates of disability for R. Laundrum [or Landrum] and Solomon Wood. Wood's certificate, dated from Dublin Depot, Virginia on October 20, 1863, is signed by W. Washington, who writes that Wood suffers from a gunshot wound in the groin and will be unfit for duty for at least 30 days. Laundrum's certificate, issued at Montgomery Springs, Virginia [i.e., Montgomery White Sulphur Springs] and signed by senior surgeon J. Lewis Woodville on July 9, 1863, states that Laundrum has been furloughed for 60 days to go to Pulaski County.

This collection had originally been assigned the title "Twenty-fourth Virginia Volunteer Regiment Records." During processing, the title was changed to "24th Virginia Infantry Records" to more closely follow the common conventions used when referring to names of Civil War units.
