Biographical Note
George W. Viar was a soldier in Company E of the 24th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted and mustered in February 28, 1862, at Newbern (Pulaski County), Virginia. He was wounded on June 21, 1862, at the Seven Days Battles, and he was captured on April 1, 1865, and imprisoned at Five Forks, Virginia.
He may have also served in Company I of the 54th Regiment, Virginia Infantry.
There is a George W. Viar, who was born in 1834 at Floyd, Virginia, to Robert and Francis Viar. He married Mary Jane Miller on May 11, 1855, at Pulaski, Virginia.

Scope and Content
The George W. Viar Papers contain reports by surgeons in Dublin, Virginia, of their examinations of Viar, declaring him unfit for field duty in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The collection also includes a note by a fellow soldier of Viar's to his family saying that he is sending documents home with Viar.
