Biographical Note

Edward H. "Reese" was born in Perry County, Illinois around 1821. He married Martha Ann Bradley (1828-1895); the 1860 federal census shows Ed. H. (a circuit court clerk) and Martha "Reese" living in Jackson County with three Reese children. Edward H. "Reese" of DeSoto (Jackson County), Illinois enlisted as a quartermaster sergeant in Company E, 15th Illinois Cavalry on December 24, 1861, and was mustered into service on June 26, 1862. Edward H. Rees died in Jackson County, Illinois on November 30, 1866, and was buried in DeSoto Cemetery.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of a single letter written by Ed. [Edward] H. Rees, of Company E, 15th Illinois Cavalry during the American Civil War. Written to "Dear Cal" from Jefferson Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, the letter is dated September 9, 1863. Rees writes of the advantages of Memphis as a place of quarantine. "You can get anything you wish and at on half what you have to pay at Corinth," he writes. He also mentions others from his company ("Blakemor" [probably James Blackmore] and Jas [James] Wood) and describes his condition and treatment: "I am taking but verry little Medicine but they cup me almost every day Round the region of my liver & stomeach and sometimes between the shoulders and give me A coald bath every night."
