Biographical Note

Constantine Christian Badger was born in Westchester County, New York, ca. 1837. The 1850 federal census lists a Constantine C. Badger, 14, living in the Gilmanton (Belknap County), New Hampshire, home of Margaret C. Badger. He attended Gilmanton Academy and obtained a medical degree from Dartmouth College in 1858. He is again listed in Margaret Badger's home in 1860, described as a 23-year-old physician. He enlisted for three years' service in Company I, 6th New Hampshire Infantry at Gilmanton on December 16, 1861, and was mustered into service on January 14, 1862. He was discharged at Fredericksburg, Virginia on August 11, 1862, and became a contract surgeon. Records show that a Conrad [sic] C. Badger enlisted as a sergeant in Company E, 34th New Jersey Infantry on November 12, 1863. He was commissioned an assistant surgeon on June 13, 1864, and mustered in on February 10, 1865. Badger mustered out of the service at Selma, Alabama on April 30, 1866. Following the war, Badger apparently worked as a physician in Hillsborough (Hillsborough County), New Hampshire. He died in 1867.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of a single letter from Con. [Constantine] C. Badger, written from Nashua, [New Hampshire], to his mother, regarding his intention to enlist in the 6th New Hampshire Infantry as a nurse during the American Civil War. Badger writes that he has been unable to find any employment in his line, had little hope of obtaining an army steward's position, and that enlisting as a nurse seems the best way for him to serve. "I am willing to do this," Badger writes. "In fact am glad to do it. I am tired of running about in search of something to do and my medical friends here advise me to go in any position." He predicts that he would not need to remain a nurse for long and that if he later obtains a position in the 8th New Hampshire, he can transfer.
