R. Buckley was a Captain in the 197th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment of the Union Army, guarding prisoners at the Rock Island, Illinois, POW camp, during the American Civil War. The letter is from Buckley to his wife and mother on October 5, 1864. He writes about illness among his men and transferring the back pay of a dead soldier to the soldier's father.

Biographical Note

R. Buckley was a Captain in the 197th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment of the Union Army, guarding prisoners at the Rock Island, Illinois, POW camp, during the American Civil War.

This is probably Ralph Buckley (1830-1895), who was born in England and a tinsmith in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He served in Company B of the Union Army's 124th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, which mustered out in 1863, and then in Company I of the 197th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, which existed for 100 days in 1864 and acted as guards at Rock Island. While serving, he rose tp the rank of Captain. He and his wife Sarah are buried in Middletown Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elwyn, Pennsylvania.
