Abstract
John Buchanan Floyd (1806-1863) was Governor of Virginia, 1848-1852; U.S. Secretary of War, 1857-1860; and a Major-general of the Virginia state troops during the American Civil War. The John Buchanan Floyd Letter was written from Camp Jackson in Wytheville, Virginia, to L. P. Walker during the American Civil War. It concerns a West Point cadet, B.A. Tirrett[?] from Louisiana, who wanted a position as a Confederate officer.

Biographical Note

John Buchanan Floyd (1806-1863) was Governor of Virginia, 1848-1852; U.S. Secretary of War, 1857-1860; and a Major-general of the Virginia state troops during the American Civil War. He was commissioned a Confederate brigadier general in May 1861 and served in the West Virginia campaign under Gen. Robert E. Lee. He was commissioned a major general in March 1862.
