Abstract
William Addison "Add" Caldwell (1856-1910) of Craig County, Virginia, was the first student to enroll at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC, later Virginia Tech), in October 1872. He graduated in 1876, as part of the second graduating class of VAMC. The collection consists of Caldwell's Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College report card from the 1875 academic year, with the envelope it was sent in; a bible given to Caldwell in 1878 as a graduation gift; a letter written by him in Wrightsville, North Carolina, in 1910, a month and a half before his death, to his niece Katherine Caldwell in Radford, Virginia; and a photograph, ca. 1900, of the Caldwell family.

Biographical Note

William Addison "Add" Caldwell (1856-1910) of Craig County, Virginia, was the first student to enroll at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC, later Virginia Tech), in October 1872. He graduated in 1876, as part of the second graduating class of VAMC. Several of his brothers also attended the college.

After graduation, Caldwell taught school in Craig County, worked at Norfolk and Western in Roanoke, and was employed by numerous firms in Wilmington, North Carolina. After recovering from brain surgery, on the advice of a doctor to move closer to salt air, Caldwell became a clerk at the Tangmoore (or Tarrymoore) Hotel at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington. Shortly after moving, he sustained a head injury and died.
