Biographical Note

David Norvell Walker, son of David and Amanda Malvina Norvell Walker, was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on April 24, 1833. He moved as a child with his parents to Richmond and attended the University of Virginia. Before the Civil War, Walker engaged in the tobacco business in Richmond. In 1854, he married Avis Macy Barney; the couple would have 10 children. In 1862, Walker joined Otey's Artillery Battery. He succeeded Otey as the battery's commander and was later breveted a major. Returning to Richmond after the war, Walker initially continued to work in the tobacco business but after a few years became an insurance agent for several large companies. Walker also served for many years as treasurer of St. Paul's Church Home. David Norvell Walker died on June 30, 1902 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.

Administrative History

Situated at 506 Leigh Street, Richmond, St. Paul's Church Home for orphans was established in 1861. The home closed in 1928.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the business records of David N. Walker of Richmond, Virginia. The materials relate largely to Walker's role as treasurer for the St. Paul's Church Home of Richmond, particularly a number of insurance policies written on the home by Walker, acting as agent for the Insurance Company of North America, the Portsmouth Insurance Copmany, and the Queen Insurance Company. Among the other treasurer's records are lists of receipts and disbursements, correspondence, and resolutions. Also in the collection are materials relating to Walker's business as an insurance agent and personal financial affairs. Among these are correspondence, notes, account statements, and receipts.
