Abstract
The Amon W. Updike Correspondence consists of photocopies of five letters from Updike while camped in New Kent, Chesterfield, and Henrico counties, Virginia, to his sister, Phebe Arthur. Also included are photocopies of letters from Phebe Arthur to her husband Henry, letters from Henry to Phebe and to other family members, and a letter from J.O. Hensley, Arthur's captain, informing Phebe of her husband's death.

Biographical Note

Amon W. Updike was a Confederate soldier in the 53rd Virginia Regiment, Bartons Brigade, in the Civil War.

Scope and Contents

Amon W. Updike Correspondence consists of photocopies of five letters (1864-1865) from Updike while camped in New Kent, Chesterfield, and Henrico counties, Virginia, to his sister, Phebe Arthur.

The collection also includes photocopies of letters (1861-1862) from Phebe Arthur to her husband Henry; letters from Henry to Phebe and to other family members; and a letter from J.O. Hensley, Arthur's captain, informing Phebe of her husband's death.
