The name Benton appears at the top of pages of the ledger, which is probably the location of the business, likely a general store in Benton, Holmes County, Ohio. Ledger entries date from 1854-1856 and contain the goods sold to individuals, such as coffee, muslin, nails, sugar, and butter. Several customer names repeat, such as McDaniel Castor, Sarah Nixon Snyder, Hannah Milhouse, and Hugh McCulloch, among many others. The newspaper clippings date to the 1890s and include poetry, recipes, obituaries, marriages, short stories, and more.
