Scope and Content
This collection contains three letters from "produce commission merchant" C. E. Sydnor & Co. of Richmond, Virginia, to the Tarter Brothers of Rural Retreat, primarily related to the purchase and shipment of cabbages. C. E. Sydnor warns that "we have had so many people to offer to consign us a Car of Cabbage in the last few days, that your market certainly must be in an unsettled condition" and offer a price of $3 to $3.50 per hundred cabbages for "full green, large size, hard head Cabbage" with an extra for added potatoes if they are "large size and clean, extra nice." They recommend shipping with another seller to reduce cost. Also included are crate tags and envelopes printed with C. E. Sydnor & Co. information and, in one case, an advertisement for elastic starch.
