Source of Acquisition

The Records of WUVT were transferred to Special Collections and University Archives in 2017. Additional materials were purchased by Special Collections and University Archives in 2021.

Processing Information

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Records of WUVT commenced in September 2022 and completed in September 2022.

Administrative History

Students began illegal radio broadcasting in September 1947 on an AM frequency. The next spring, on April 1, 1948, WUVT officially began broadcasting on an AM frequency as a Virginia Polytechnic Institute student organization, stationed in a tower in the War Memorial Gym. In 1951, a fire destroyed the tower and the WUVT equipment. The station moved to Squires Student Center, and in the next year it began broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In 1969, WUVT-FM began operating an FM frequency at 350 watts in mono, expanding to 2500 watts by 1981. Today, the station broadcasts at 90.7 MHz on the FM band from a tower atop Price Mountain. WUVT-FM, the Bugle yearbook, Collegiate Times newspaper, Silhouette literary magazine, and VTTV Channel 33 television station are all owned and operated by The Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech (EMCVT), an independent nonprofit corporation founded in 1997 to take over the work of the Student Media Board.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the records of WUVT including administrative records, newspaper clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks. Also included in this collection are advertisement and promotional materials, engineering logs, equipment manuals, and information about playlists and The Woove , WUVT's student-run art and literary publication. This collection contains materials from 1950 to 2008. See the Arrangement note for additional information on the collection.

Arrangement

Series I: Administrative Records contains the administrative records of WUVT. It has five subseries: Playlists, Eningeering Logs, Equipment Manuals, Advertisements and Promotional Materials, and The Woove . Subseries I: Playlists contains information about the music and playlists that WUVT played during broadcasts between 1970 and 2001. Subseries II: Engineering Logs contains some of the engineering logs and notebooks for the broadcasting systems between 1962 and 1982. Subseries III: Equiptment Manuals contains directional manuals for the equipment that was used by WUVT between 1958 and 1999. Subseries IV: Advertisements and Promotional Materials contains WUVT branded merchandise that was used for advertisements. Also included in this subseries are five WUVT t-shirts. Subseries V: The Woove contains copies of The Woove and information about the magazine from 1997 to 2004. The Woove is a quarterly art and literary publication put out by WUVT.
