Abstract
This collection consists of a May 10, 1864, letter written by Stephen F. Poindexter of the 10th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army, at Union Hall, Franklin County, Virginia. Written to his cousin W.H. Smith of the 2nd Missouri Infantry of the Confederate Army, Poindexter begs his cousin to reply to his letters, inquires after the health of Smith's uncle Jim, and informs Smith of the capture of Poindexter's brother by Union Army forces. The letter closes by directing any reply correspondence to be sent to Camp Lee in Richmond, Virginia.

Biographical Note

Stephen F. Poindexter was born December 8, 1834, in Franklin County, Virginia. He enlisted in the 10th Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army on May 10, 1864. After the Civil War, he returned to Franklin County, where he died on July 23, 1905, and is buried at Poindexter Cemetery.

Scope and Content

This collection contains a Civil War letter written by Stephen F. Poindexter, a private in the 10th Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army. The letter was written by Poindexter at Union Hall, Franklin County, Virginia, and is dated May 10, 1864. Poindexter writes to his cousin W. H. Smith of the 2nd Missouri Infantry, Confederate Army, about the lack of mail from Smith and the capture of Poindexter's brother. Poindexter begs his cousin to write him more frequently and asks for updated about health of Smith's uncle Jim. The letter closes by stating that since Poindexter has enlisted in the Confederate Army, any future replies should be directed to him at Camp Lee in Richmond, Virginia.
