Biographical / Historical

Joseph T. Baily graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1870, with the thesis "Review of the Locomotive Engine 'No. 14,' of the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad Co." He is presumably the Joseph Tatnall Baily memorialized in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Paterson (Passaic County), New Jersey. Son of Tatnall and Jane Van Blarcom Baily, he was born in New York on September 20, 1848; he died at Jersey City, New Jersey, on January 15, 1873.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a single hardbound notebook containing notes on engineering and mechanics, taken by Joseph T. Baily, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York) in 1870. The majority of the notes were based on lectures by Charles McMillan (1841-1927), professor of geodesy at Rensselaer from 1865 to 1871. The notes cover such subjects as construction of earth dams, strength of materials, and railroad engineering. Included among the notes are various small sketches. A program for the reading of senior theses at Rensselaer in 1870 is tipped into the front of the volume.
