Biographical Note
Jubal A. Early (1816-1894) was a Confederate general in the Civil War. He was born in Franklin County, Virginia, and a Lynchburg, Virginia, resident most of his life. In 1866, he published A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence in the Confederate States of America .
Scope and Content
The collection consists of a letter written by Early to General William H. Payne of Warrenton, Virginia, about the appointment of General Lunsford Lindsay Lomax to the Presidency of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg.
