Provenance

The collection was transferred to the VMFA Library from the Marketing and Public Affairs department in the 1990s. The original boxes were labeled "narrative history," a project which was sponsored by the department, probably as part of the larger plans to commemorate the museum's 50th anniversary.

Biographical Note

Robert "Bob" Merritt was a theater and arts critic for the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" newspaper from the 1970s through the 1990s and wrote about VMFA frequently. He authored all of the articles in the supplement that was published by the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" on January 12, 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the museum's opening.
