Biographical / Historical

Penny Morrill is a local historian and author. In the 1970s she wrote four books about the architecture of historic Alexandria. In 1979 she was the curator for "Who Built Alexandria? Architects in Alexandria, 1750-1900," an exhibition at Carlyle House that documented the building trades in Old Town Alexandria. Ms. Morrill served as president of the Historic Alexandria Foundation. Additionally, in the 1990s she published several books about 20th century Mexican silversmiths.

Content Description

The collection consists of correspondence, notes, working papers, copies of primary and secondary source materials, clippings, photographs, and minutes relating to Ms. Morrill's research concerning 18th and 19th century architecture in Alexandria.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in three series, one with subseries, as follows: Series 1: Background Materials Series 2: Who Built Alexandria? Subseries: Background Materials, Alexandria Builders, Alexandria Buildings, General Subjects. Series is organized topically and chronologically, according to the organizational scheme created by Ms. Morrill. Series 3: Historic Alexandria Foundation
