[Identification of item], Railway & Locomotive Historical Society's Richard E. Scholtz Slide Collection, MS 941, California State Railroad Museum Library & Archives, Sacramento, California.
On loan from the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society.
As a long-time employee of the Santa Fe Railway in Chicago, Richard Scholz was able to save papers, letters related to steam appliance suppliers, blueprints, folios covering all aspects of steam engines plus cars that Santa Fe was disposing of. Upon his death, he donated this material (23 tons) to The Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society.
This collection is comprised of eight boxes of 35 mm color slides of diesel locomotives collected by Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway employee Richard Scholz and taken between 1964 and 2000. There are over 1,300 slides of Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway locomotives in this collection. In addition, there are slides of many other freight locomotives from companies across the United States and Canada, including Burlington Northern, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian Pacific, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific. There are also 76 slides of freight locomotives belonging to manufacturers including EMD, GE, and GATX. It is unclear whether Richard Scholz was the photographer.
Arranged by railroad, then by locomotive number. Engines belonging to locomotive manufacturers have been placed at the end of the collection in alphabetical order.
